In Connecticut, morning traffic and style reporter Desiree Fontaine was arrested for suspected theft. Police detained and later released Desiree Fontaine after a Sears store accused her of stealing. Desiree Fontaine’s accused crime? Shoplifting $104.98 worth of perfume. What kinds of fines and punishment could Desiree Fontaine be facing?

Desiree Fontaine accused of shoplifting

In the Westfield Connecticut Post Mall in Milford, Conn., Desiree Fontaine was detained by police. The security of the Sears store in the mall originally questioned Fontaine about $104.98 worth of merchandise she had not paid for. Police were called, and Desiree Fontaine was charge with sixth-degree larceny. The reporter was released on a promise to appear in court on July 7.

Connecticut Style by Desiree Fontaine

Desiree Fontaine, in addition to reporting on morning traffic, is best known for hosting Connecticut Style. This show features everything from money-saving tips to style and features. Affordable style tips are a huge feature of the show — but shoplifting isn’t so much a money-saving tip as a bad idea. WTNH, the station Fontaine works for, has refused to comment on what they are saying is a “personal matter.”

Sixth Degree Larceny in CT

In Connecticut, the Sixth Degree Larceny charge brought against Desiree Fontaine carries relatively minor punishments. Larceny, or taking an item of value without payment or permission, has six degrees in Connecticut. Sixth Degree Larceny in Connecticut is the lowest level of larceny, for crimes valued at less than $250. Desiree Fontaine could face up to three months in jail and fines of up to $500, as well as a class C misdemeanor on her public record. All of this for one bottle of perfume raises the question of what Desiree Fontaine was thinking.

I totally loved that AM news cast … Sonia, Darren, Gil and Desiree! I thought they had a great chemistry together. That's why I was so surpised when I found out this happened. What really amazes me is how people can be so mean and judgemental of others! Obviously Desiree is not above the law , and she does need to "pay" for her alleged crime . I dont think anyone is debating that fact! She obviously needs help and I hope she gets it and learns from this incident. But, how people can be so mean natured and bitter is what is unbelievable. Maybe, when they learn proper english and how to spell correctly , then they can actually make an intelligent sounding statement about someone. They sound like a bunch of "losers" themselves! ( thats the correct spelling btw). I guess lack of education (and most likely good parenting) combined with insecurity, would account for the way they talk about others with such disrespect and hatred.
I hope everything works out for the best!

Sorry folks, at 33 she should know better. She was probably turning over 100M a year at channel 8 and gave it up for a a bottle of perfume, having Hugh O'keef, that perfume will cost her 10 grand,,,once a thief, always a thief,,you can bet this wasnt the first thing she lifted..but probably the first time she was caught,,she is not higher than the law, or any other individual who steals. if its not yours, leave it alone.

I Agree with HBW! Just bc Desiree does not fit the so called "Norm" as far as Broadcasting is concerned is no reason to Hate on Her Like that! Remember A Saint is Just a Sinner who fell down But will Get back up Again! For Desiree is Inspiring and a Pure Joy to Watch and Listen to. I pray for her Redemption soon so that she can show all those Haters what true Preserverance is about.

I agree with you completly. I thought it was the biggest joke that she was hosting CT style when she had NONE! She was giving CT a bad name. YOu are so rightscene stealing Viewers couldn't even see the traffic she was talking about b/c she was in the MIDDLE of the screen in some cheap, obnoxious outfit. It was a pleasure to watch thte news this past week. I thought she was on vacation until I heard at a party this wknd of her crime. I can't believe Channel 8 hasn't reported on this news. I guess I have to get my news from another station. But I will tune in for Sonia. She has class!

I think she aught to be ashamed of herself. Clown. first of all if they detained her they makde her open her purse which is where they found what she took. I find it to be a real pathetic part on WTNH when they say it is a personal matter? Excuse me? And the rest of humanity does not deserve the same respect to not have their BS aired on TV before they are proven guiilty? Shouldnt we all get the same respect and right to privacy as Ms. Fontain or is it that they feel she is above the law? Well no she is not above the law and I will be in court to make sure I see her go before the judge and make sure she knows what a ruin she has made of her life and career. her of all people had no reason to steal. Was she stealing food? Was she feeding her starving children or animals? NO! She is a looser. Good riddens ya troll!

Sounds like someone needed a raise.

    • Diane I

LOL! What a total idiot. I am a bit appauled that WTNH feels it is a private matter while the rest of humanity gets arrested for minor or major offenses and are bashed on the news for months to come. They really need to respect that privacy personal matter thing for all because she is not above the law. Infact expected to up keep the law and live by certain standards. She is a troll annoying doesnt let anyone speak on the morning news and GOOD RIDDENS TOO YOU DEZ. Ya thief
