Mean Girls of South Hadley – Bullying is out of hand

When will society take action?

School bullying takes many forms, and adults should be paying greater attention and teaching children to resolve their differences peacefully.

“Boys will be boys and girls will be girls.” There’s a pat truism to that, but also a disturbing undercurrent: it betrays a deep-seated lack of human compassion. For those who try to sweep school bullying under the rug, for instance, it is painfully clear that their cries to “let the kids sort it out” or claims of “survival of the fittest” are signs that they stopped caring about humanity long ago.

This isn’t Social Darwinism when you’re dealing with teenagers like the “Mean Girls” of South Hadley, Massachusetts. Phoebe Prince, 15, was at a fragile, awkward age where peer acceptance is vital. She’d just come to the U.S. from Ireland and had never had to face the kind of mean-spirited school bullying the Mean Girls of South Hadley were dishing out. It drove Phoebe Price to a tragic suicide, many allege. This payday loans blogger has a daughter of his own. I cannot turn a blind eye to this; I can neither justify it nor sweep it away. What will it be like for my little girl?

All because the freshman dated a senior football player?

That was Phoebe Prince’s apparent crime, and the Mean Girls of South Hadley decided to put her in her place. Relentless intimidation no doubt tore her down on a daily basis. Eventually Phoebe Prince hanged herself.

But it didn’t end there

The Mean Girls of South Hadley mocked the poor girl on Facebook after her death. State police investigated, and the Mean Girls played dumb and claimed they did nothing wrong. They even bragged to peers that they’d fooled the police, media sources claim. Students of South Hadley High who had been interviewed on television were thrown back into the meat grinder as soon as the cameras went away. It has been alleged that the Mean Girls of South Hadley get off because they’re pretty, popular and stars on their high school sports teams. They’re definitely still in school.

Is South Hadley a suicide slum?

It is not. Reports indicate that South Hadley is “a nice, comfortable middle-class suburb that hugs the Connecticut River,” according to HealthFreedomAlliance.org. Parents of students of South Hadley High like Darby O’Brien are mystified that such a thing is allowed to go on in his town. “Things like this aren’t supposed to happen in South Hadley,” he told the AP. “Instead of confronting the evil among us, the reality that there are bullies roaming the corridors at South Hadley High, people are blaming the victim, looking for excuses why a 15-year-old girl would do this. People are in denial.”

O’Brien’s scared straight plan

According to HealthFreedomAlliance.org, O’Brien is thinking about attending an upcoming school meeting on bullying and the Mean Girls of South Hadley. He is mulling over whether he should suggest that the Mean Girls be required to view the autopsy photos of Phoebe Prince.

“Let them see what a kid who hung herself looks like,” he said.

Going forward, however, parents and school administrators should be required to meet whenever instances like this occur. If repeat instances of sufficient magnitude happen, juvenile detention and/or Child Protective Services removal could be next. School bullying must not be tolerated.

I'm sorry for the Prince Family's loss. However, such a tragic loss. Kids know a days in High School and Jr. High School can be rude, mean, and evil. Sometimes, even are so called-friends or Best-friends can betray us. It's Psychologically and Physically draining. I was watching a movie documentary movie on Lifetime Channel (Odd-girl-Out) very similar to Phoebe's incident and here I'm thinking; wow, it all starts with jealousy, envy and hatred. Then, that's when the taunting, name-calling, cyber-bulling and (Psychologically or Physically) abuse begins. One thing for SURE I have to say for the "9" Convicted students: "KARMA" is DRAG.

These so called mean girls are criminals. I hope the prosecutor goes for the death penalty. A young woman died because of the direct actions of the Mean Girls. They should be prosecuted as adults, and receive the death penalty if they are found guilty. Torture and murder deserve it. Thats what those monsters did.

A push to prosecute the school teachers and staff who knew but did nothing would only be right, as well.

Phoebe was the attrative one. The girls who bullied her were ugly. They were obiviously jealous. One of the girls properly got mad because her little boyfriend dumped her for that pretty Phoebe girl.

    • Steven Tarlow

Don’t know if that’s what happened or not. But it still shows us not only how ugly some people can be inside, but how ugly public schools have gotten that teachers and staff will do little or nothing to stop something like this when they know it’s happening.

these bullies are sooo mean how could they do that to someone? they may not blame theirselves now, but they will! in the end..it is THEIR FAULT!!!!! THEY SHOULD BE ASSHAMED!!!!!!!!!!!! she was very beautiful… prolly far prettier then the stupid mean little brats who think they are better!!!

    • Steven Tarlow

You're right, Kaytlynn – they should be ashamed. I would add that the parents and faculty members who knew this was going on should also be ashamed. More than likely, the parents of the "Mean Girls" behave in a similar fashion in their own lives – stepping on others and lacking in real human compassion. People learn from their role models.

these "mean girls" need to stop there stupid childish crap! this is horrible and it doesnt matter how pretty or how "cool" you are bc in the end that doesnt count… theyll get what they deserve.

Bullies are the product of criminally incompetent parents. But don’t expect our cowards in authority to admit it.

Truly a heart-wrenching story. My heart goes out to the family of Phoebe Prince. School bullying should never be tolerated and must be taken seriously. Tragic events like this have happened before and, sadly, people are still in denial of the horrifying effects of bullying.
